The terms art and science help us to understand and communicate different ways of perceiving and responding to the world. Their differentiation is useful but their separation can be unhelpful.
In accord with a growing appreciation of the potentials afforded when thought and action draw on both science and art together, the art work that follows explores just a few of the possibilities when geology and art concepts are combined.
Exhibition
In collaboration with Alnwick Bailiffgate Museum & Gallery, Ian mounted ‘Bringing to Light’, a public exhibition that presented some of the artwork shown here in this section of the website.
Alongside the paintings, informative displays related the art to the geology of Northumberland and the Borders.

Exhibition poster
This ‘Bringing to Light’ video follows the course of our searching out volcanic tuff in the Cheviots, taking a sample and producing a thin section. Following that, it shows various thin sections rotated under the microscope in polarised light.
